Late at night—around 11:30 PM—just a few hours after the quiet celebration of my 47th birthday, I found myself walking to work once again. The streets were almost empty, wrapped in a heavy stillness that only comes when most of the world is asleep. My footsteps echoed softly on the pavement as the cold air brushed against my face. I should’ve been resting. I should’ve been enjoying my PTO. Yet there I was, heading back into the fluorescent-lit office to finish payroll.

This is one of the many things I dislike about my job—the constant weight of responsibilities that follows me even during vacations, the endless list of compliances that do not pause simply because my body and heart need rest.

As I walked down the dimly lit road, I whispered a silent prayer for safety. I’ve walked this path so many nights before, hoping not to cross paths with anyone lurking in the shadows—hoping the stories of holduppers and late-night criminals would remain nothing more than stories. It was in moments like this that my job, though financially steady, felt painfully inhumane.

Somewhere between the streetlights and the darkness in between them, a heaviness settled in my chest. My eyes welled up, and I found myself quietly crying out in my heart:

“Lord… if it is Your will that I stop living this way, please bless my online business. I want to work from home for the remaining days of my life. I want to write, design, and create art—gifts I believe You placed in me.”

But even as I prayed, I remembered: God’s thoughts are higher than my thoughts. His ways often stretch far beyond what I can see or understand. Maybe He is shaping me through this season, strengthening something in me that comfort alone could never build.

For now, all I can do is be persistent in prayer, stay grateful for what I have, and continue honoring Him through whatever work is in front of me. As 1 Corinthians 10:31 reminds us, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

I know many of you carry the same longing—the desire to spend your days doing what sets your soul on fire… and to be fully present for your family. That dream isn’t wrong. In fact, it’s often the dream that keeps us moving when life feels heavy. These God-given desires spark hope in the darkest moments, reminding us that the harvest will come if we do not give up.

But hope alone won’t bring the dream to life. We must start where we are. Begin your passion now—quietly, consistently, even if it’s only a few hours each week. Work at it diligently in the background. Each small act of faith is a seed planted… and one day, those seeds will grow into the life you’ve been praying for.

He was right there, strengthening me, guiding me, and planting seeds of hope in the very areas where I felt most drained. The long nights, the heavy responsibilities, the longing for a different kind of life—none of it was wasted. All of it was shaping me, preparing me, stretching my faith in ways comfort never could.

And maybe you are in that same place right now.

If that’s you, hear this:

God hears you.
And God is working—right now—behind the scenes of your ordinary days and weary nights.

The Bible verses that carried me through those difficult moments can carry you too. They remind us that God honors our work, strengthens our hands, and directs our steps—even when we cannot see the road ahead.

So keep praying.
Keep showing up.
Keep nurturing your passion in the background.
Keep trusting that God is weaving a purpose far greater than the pressure you feel today.

And when the time is right—
in His perfect, beautiful, unexpected timing—
the life you’ve been longing for will begin to unfold.

Until then, let every small act of faithfulness bring glory to God, knowing that He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it.
