Every June, we fire up the grill, buy a card, and call the man who taught us how to ride a bike. But have you ever stopped to wonder: Who actually started Father’s Day? Why does the date bounce around? And do other countries celebrate it too?

Where Did Father’s Day Come From?
Believe it or not, Father’s Day was born out of tragedy and a daughter’s fierce love.
The story begins in 1907 in Monongah, West Virginia. A horrific mine explosion killed over 360 men, leaving more than 1,000 children fatherless. Grace Golden Clayton, whose own father had died in 1896, proposed a one-time service to honor all those lost fathers.
However, the person who gets the official credit is Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington. After hearing a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909, Sonora thought, “Why isn’t there a day for fathers?” Her own father, Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, had raised six children as a single parent.
Sonora pushed for years. The first official Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane on June 19, 1910. It took another 62 years of stubborn campaigning (and a lot of help from card companies) before President Richard Nixon finally signed it into law as a permanent national holiday in 1972.
Who Started Father’s Day?
To summarize:
- The inspiration: Grace Golden Clayton (1907, West Virginia)
- The founder & primary advocate: Sonora Smart Dodd (1909–1972, Washington)
Why Are Father’s Day Celebrated?
While Mother’s Day focuses on maternal sacrifice, Father’s Day exists to recognize paternal bonds, guidance, and provider roles. It honors biological fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, and father figures who shape a child’s life through discipline, encouragement, and unconditional presence.
The holiday acknowledges that fatherhood isn’t just about being the “strong, silent type”—it’s about showing up.
When Is Father’s Day Weekend?
This is a common point of confusion. Father’s Day itself is always on a Sunday. So “Father’s Day weekend” refers to that Saturday and Sunday.
But here’s the catch: In most countries (including the US, UK, Canada, and India), Father’s Day falls on the third Sunday of June. Therefore, the weekend is the third full weekend of June.

A Final Thought
Whether you’re celebrating on June 21st, March 19th, or November 15th, the goal is the same: to thank the man who helped make you who you are. Father’s Day started as a lonely campaign by a daughter who missed her dad. Today, it’s a global reminder that great fathers deserve a day on the calendar—not just a footnote in history.
Mark your 2026 calendars now: If you live in the US, Canada, or UK, you’ve got a date with June 21st. Don’t wait until June 20th to buy the card.
