Handling people for almost four years has opened my eyes to many lessons about mental health. Many in the younger generation struggle today—perhaps because of the effects of the pandemic or the pressure and comparison brought by social media. Others face personal battles so heavy that they feel impossible to carry.

I’ve had my own share of trials, too. I am no different from anyone else. When my parents separated when I was 18, I had to step up and take responsibility for my four younger siblings so we wouldn’t be separated. I worked at an early age to help provide for my family—sometimes in unsafe situations late at night. Growing up, I constantly heard my parents arguing, threatening separation, and asking us to choose sides—things we were too young to understand.

When I got married, I faced more challenges. My husband struggled with drug addiction and eventually lost his job. Once again, I carried the weight of providing for my two children alone. Life became even more difficult during the pandemic, when I was the sole breadwinner for our family.

But through all of this, I held on to Jesus—the One I’ve known since childhood. He gave me everything I needed to fight the darkness and push through each difficult season. Even now, in every trial and every pain, my faith reminds me that “All things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

The Word of God has been my guide through every challenge. Because of Jesus, I learned how to live in peace even in the middle of life’s storms. Like the author of this blog post, I am grateful that I knew Jesus long before I walked through my hardest moments.

So before you begin any steps toward healing—yes, even before you start journaling—go to Jesus first. Seek Him. Hold onto Him.
“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33)
